If you love cats as much as I do, you probably have a couple of them at home. But not every cat is the same – different colors, patterns and personalities. There are so many cat breeds out there that it’s impossible to keep track of them all!
One type of cat that deserves a special mention is a black cat. If you happen to be a black-cat lover yourself, here’s some advice on how to name one. Check out this huge list of black cat names:
Black Cat Names
Sugar – A very sweet pet name for a black female cat. This name is often used for dogs as well, but since it sounds really nice with Felicia or any other popular girl name, give it a go if you feel like naming your new furry friend Sugar!
Coco – Coco is a French name meaning “coconut”. It’s mainly used for girls, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be given to a boy either!
Shadow – This one is perfect for black cats living in dark conditions because their color would easily blend with the shadow.
Midnight – If you want your cat’s name to reflect its true nature perfectly, here’s an option – Midnight!
Boogie – A funny play on words if there ever was one, this pet name will definitely make people smile when they hear it. The meaning of Boogie might not be immediately obvious, so I suggest you explain it before using it as a name for your furry friend.
Lucifer – This purrfect name speaks for itself: it’s a no-brainer! Lucifer is the name of the Devil in the Bible, and this cat will definitely be devilishly handsome.
Nero – A Latin derivative that means “black”, Nero would make an excellent name for a black cat.
Coal – If your furry friend has coal-black fur, Coal could be used as its name. It’s also a shortened form of Cole or Nolan, so if you want to use this name to honor someone in your family, go right ahead!
Midnight at Sea – A cute name for a black kitty living near the sea: the black color wouldn’t bother it in such conditions because it matches perfectly with water and even darker shades of blue.
Cinder – A variant of Cinderella as well as a word used for manufacturing glass, Cinder would also make a nice name for a black cat – just don’t forget to explain its meaning before using it!
Smoky – Smoky is a great name for a black cat that isn’t actually black – take this into account if you decide to give your feline friend this cute pet name. It’s also the shortened version of Smith and other surnames ending in ‘ky’.
Bolt – If you have an energetic kitty who loves running around the house, Bolt might be the purrfect name choice! Its origin is English, so there’s no need to explain its purpose or definition – everyone will get it right away.
Hood – A name used for boys that comes from the German word ‘houp’ meaning “hood”. It’s not too common, so it could be a great choice if you want to give your cat an unusual but cute title!
Midnight at Sea – Another name for black cats living near the sea, or those who are just huge fans of water in general.
Cinder* – Similar to Cinder, this one is made of glass and has beautiful colors. If your cat is elegant and shiny, try this name on for size!
Smoky Black – A fancy way to say our good ol’ purrfect friend Smoky. This would definitely suit a more sophisticated kitty cat.
Midnight – Midnight is an ideal name for all black cats, no matter what their personality or fur pattern may look like. It’s easy to say and remember too!
